Born and raised in Washington, DC, Kathi learned to play the piano by rote at age 4, could play and sing entire songbooks by 9 years, and after discovering the portability of the guitar, became a singer/songwriter at 12. School choirs, ensembles, musicals, and an all-girl group called Odyssey provided a rich foundation of a variety of music styles as well as a love for the healing benefits of music. While studying music therapy at The Catholic University of America, Kathi took full advantage of Washington’s thriving live music scene, performing as easily in coffeehouses and pubs with her guitar, as in upscale hotel piano bars.
An invitation to perform in The Hague, The Netherlands for the summer sparked a love affair between European audiences and Kathi’s music. Her extensive soft jazz/pop repertoire, so well-suited to her vocals (reminiscent of Katie Melua, Norah Jones, Linda Ronstadt) and her sophisticated charm made Kathi a favorite behind the piano at VIP events in Holland and across Europe (such as World Cup Soccer events, international tennis tournaments, Royal Family private luncheons and even an invitation to perform at Crown Prince Willem Alexander and Princess Maxima’s wedding reception). Two albums were recorded in The Netherlands, the second of which, “Love Amazes Me”, is still distributed in both Holland and Germany and on iTunes.
Kathi continues to travel between both continents, but these days it is as much for personal as professional reasons, with close family and friends now on both sides of the ocean. In between travels, Kathi has received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Florida, made contributions to published research studies, and on random Friday nights, continues to raise money for various charities with her exclusive “Music at the Lake” events ‘back home’ in Florida.
Most recently, she has returned to her singer/songwriting roots and 2011 may just be the year she offers an entire album of Kathi Suprata originals.
