DJ MAESTRO became international recognized after his first release of the famous Blue Note Trip compilation albums. The Trips sold over 250.000 copies until now.The new Blue Note Trip is out now!
In the Amsterdam apartment of Martijn Barkhuis (Groningen, 1970) is a doll. A DJ Maestro Action Figure, the text on the box says proudly: “DJ, drinks and smokes really!”. “That is rather excessive,” says the DJ and his voice matured in oak wood, while his Davidoff lies in the ashtray, to fill our glass Pinot Grigio: “The doll doesn’t DJ at all.”
Maestro filled many dance floors at home and abroad with much sweat, which cramped calves can testify. He made eight albums for the legendary jazz label Blue Note (Blue Note Trip, seven editions). One to six were all platinum and sold over 250.000 items total. The latest edition is just released and Maestro also mixed an awarded album for Verve (Delicious Jazz).
Funk, Jazz, Latin, the DJ seems to have been brought up on soul food and hot peppers, but comes from a family where appropriate silent all listened to classical music. He played the violin at a very reasonable level. Maestro’ fascination by turntables, mixer, headphones and vinyl started as a teenager, with friends and their drive-in shows at school parties. It left him with an insatiable hunger for albums, and an incredible disgust for dance classics.

His Blue Note Trip evenings in the Netherlands and annual appearances at festivals like North Sea Jazz, The Hague Jazz and more made a statement for Jazz by a DJ. He dragged his record cases from Indonesia to Curacao, from Japan to the USA and many festivals and venues all over Europe.
Maestro is also the founder of Radio Jazz . He also presents “Down & Out” for the VPRO Radio 6.

Radio 6 Presents: VPROJazzLive met Vera Vingerhoeds wordt vanaf deze week op woensdagavond tussen 23 en 01 uur uitgezonden. Radio 6 Presents: Down & Out met DJ Maestro hoor je voortaan op vrijdagavond tussen 23 en 01 uur. Kun je voor het uitgaan nog lekker even indansen voor de spiegel…
